Patchy (Christopher Hall) – Guitar Hero, Synth, OSC, AxiDraw – Championship TouchDesigner Project

This project was created as part of The Interactive & Immersive Championship

Challenge 1: For the interactive challenge, I used a Guitar Hero controller & a ‘Blip Blox’ toy synthesizer. I received data from the Guitar Hero controller over OSC into TouchDesigner, and used the guitar to control a 3D scene, and used it as a MIDI Out device to trigger sounds on the synth. I then routed the sounds from the synth into TouchDesigner to make the 3D scene audio reactive. In the end the game was an Abstract Alien Guitar Hero

Challenge 2: For the integration challenge, I thought it would be fun to do ‘real time rendering’ on a piece of paper. Commands from the Twitch chat would trigger an AxiDraw pen plotter to draw various shapes. I started with the official Real Time AxiDraw Control example in Processing and integrated OSC communication. In TouchDesigner I would rotate and scale SOPs, and when a Twitch command was received I would send that SOP’s vertex locations to the AxiDraw, allowing the audience to collaborate on a live generative paper and ink artwork.
