For anyone interested in visual effects, the intro sequence of HBO’s The Last of Us is a real treat. Full of procedurally generated fungal growth, it’s a perfect visual representation of a fungal infection that’s a major part of the show’s plot.

In a program like TouchDesigner, it can be difficult for beginners to imagine how this kind of 3D geometry might be approached. That is, until you learn about the feature-packed LSystem SOP! An operator that often flies under the radar of new developers, it enables the creation of a wide variety of geometry – from trees, plants, flowers, lightning, and snowflakes to complex geometric patterns.

In this video, Jack DiLaura walks you through creating an L-System-based effect in TouchDesigner, loosely inspired by the intro sequence from The Last of Us.

You’ll learn about a number of the LSystem SOP’s many commands and parameters, along with how you can use creative rendering/texturing tricks to simulate the “growth” of the organic structures you create.
