Hello, this is Xtal!
In this tutorial, we’ll dive into building *Grainscape FX* — an effect that transforms simple footage into textured visuals shaped entirely by noise. By combining multiple Noise TOPs with Slope, Blur, and Composite operations, and then displacing the source video, we can create a raw, grain-like landscape that feels both experimental and cinematic.
We’ll also go a step further by extracting edge outlines, refining them through Monochrome and Transform TOPs, and finally overlaying them back onto the displaced footage. To add dynamism, a Switch TOP controlled by an LFO CHOP allows the outlines to appear and disappear rhythmically, giving the final composition a living, pulsing energy.
This process is all about exploring noise not just as randomness, but as a **textural design tool**. Whether you’re aiming for abstract visuals, experimental filters, or cinematic overlays, this technique can expand your creative toolkit inside TouchDesigner.
