Hello, this is Xtal.
I’m excited to share Afterimage FX, a real-time visual effect created in TouchDesigner that emulates refracted ghost trails and fluid distortions.

This effect explores how motion, light, and memory overlap through time. Built entirely with TOP based techniques, this project uses Noise, Displace, Feedback, and Composite nodes to simulate the sensation of visuals bending, echoing, and dissolving like ghost images trailing behind fluid motion.

Technical Highlights:

– Noise-Based Distortion Field

Procedural noise textures drive the displacement of image data, producing an organic warping effect that evolves continuously over time.

– Displace TOP for Liquid Refraction

The Displace TOP is central to this effect, using animated noise patterns to create flowing, glass-like spatial distortions that resemble refracted light through fluid.

– Temporal Feedback Loop

A controlled feedback system accumulates and blends previous frames, generating soft trails and subtle afterimages that fade with time.

– Composite Layering for Ghost Echoes

Composite TOP blends the distorted current frame with delayed feedback inputs to reinforce the illusion of motion memory and depth.

– Parameter Controls

Exposed sliders allow control over distortion intensity, noise speed, feedback persistence, and blending modes making it easy to adapt the effect to different visual styles.
