As a beginner to TouchDesigner, creating 3D geometry can seem like a daunting task, as the typical workflow is so different from your average 3D modelling software. But this alternative approach to modelling provides some major benefits, including the ability to non-destructively edit the components that make up your final “model”, not to mention the potential for adding in real-time animation. Although not unique to TouchDesigner, the procedural approach really redefines what it means to “model” 3D geometry.

In this video, Jack DiLaura takes a look at procedural 3D modelling in TouchDesigner by working with the program’s POP and SOP operator families to recreate the famous Utah Teapot 3D model.

After a brief history lesson on the teapot model, you’ll learn how to use the new Line POP to create complex bezier curves quickly and easily, the Revolve POP for revolving geometry around an axis, and more!

Along with that, you’ll discover how converting data between POP and SOP families opens up access to an even wider set of tools. Great for beginners looking to explore the POP and SOP operator families.
