Building an Interactive Editing System in TouchDesigner
In this tutorial, I walk through the process of building an interactive, time-based editing system in TouchDesigner.
Coming from a filmmaking background and tools like Premiere and After Effects, I was interested in exploring how editing could exist outside a fixed timeline. This project focuses on preserving the pacing and rhythm of a film while allowing variation and interaction through procedural logic.
The tutorial covers:
– Using the Timer CHOP as a timeline
– Building a segments table to control clip duration
– Automatically calculating video length with Info CHOPs
– Sequencing footage with Switch TOPs
– Adding randomness with Noise CHOPs
– Using MediaPipe and machine learning for gesture-based interaction
– Exporting the final result with Movie File Out
This tutorial is intended for filmmakers, media artists, and designers who are new to TouchDesigner and interested in interactive or generative approaches to editing.
