In 1977, astronomers detected a remarkable radio signal from deep space, now famously known as the “Wow! signal.” Captured by the Big Ear radio telescope at Ohio State University, the signal appeared as a strong, narrowband emission at approximately 1420 MHz—the frequency associated with neutral hydrogen, and thus of significant interest in the search for extraterrestrial intelligence (SETI). Astronomer Jerry Ehman noted the signal’s unusual intensity, marking “Wow!” beside the alphanumeric code “6EQUJ5” on the original printout. Lasting exactly 72 seconds, it originated from the direction of the constellation Sagittarius and was never observed again. To this day, the Wow! signal remains unexplained, continuing to intrigue scientists and astronomers alike.
